The heart of the old town
The center of the old town is Syntagma Square, a broad, bright square surrounded by historic buildings such as the former parliament building (Vouleftiko) and the Archaeological Museum. Here, you can especially feel Nafplio’s importance in Greek history – as a political and cultural center in the early years of the modern state.
From here, the narrow lanes branch out in all directions. Some lead down to the harbor, others up into the higher districts below the fortress. The streets are deliberately winding – a legacy of Venetian urban planning that provided both protection and a unique cityscape.

The old town of Nafplio is not a place you “visit,” but one you wander through. Small streets like Vasileos Konstantinou or the lanes around Psaromachalas invite you to let yourself drift. Around every corner, new impressions await: neoclassical facades, hidden courtyards, small boutiques, and traditional tavernas.
Bougainvillea climbs between the houses, and from open windows the life of the city spills बाहर – conversations, music, the smell of coffee and freshly prepared food. Especially in the early morning or late afternoon, the old town reveals its calmest and at the same time most beautiful atmosphere.
Between fortresses and the sea
The old town is closely connected to the surrounding fortresses. Everywhere you can see the silhouette of Palamidi, towering high above the city, or the walls of Akronafplia, lying like a stone backbone over the peninsula. This proximity of urban life and monumental military architecture is one of Nafplio’s defining features.
At the same time, the sea is always present: the harbor, the promenade, and the view of the small island fortress of Bourtzi create an open, maritime atmosphere that gives the old town a special lightness.
And then, of course, there are the cats, everywhere in the little alleys, as if they belonged to the old town just as much as the old walls and the blooming bougainvillea. Sometimes they lie lazily in the sun, sometimes they curiously watch the people passing by, as if they were the neighborhood’s secret guardians.
These laid-back street kings give the place an extra dose of charm and make every walk a little more lively.
